Church Ministry Institute

Project in Ministry
Year 3

Purpose

During the third and final year of the Church Ministry Institute all participants are required to complete a Project in Ministry. This project gives evidence of the participant' s ability to bring all the elements of the Program together: theological studies, pastoral skills and spiritual development.

In responding to their baptismal call and by growing in a deeper knowledge of their faith, participants have become better able to actively participate in Christ = s saving mission of the Church in the home, in the workplace, in their parishes and other related apostolates throughout the world.

Orientation

A program Administrator will visit each site, distribute materials and explain the Project in Ministry in May of Year 2.

Stages of Development

•  Discernment

•  Commitment

•  Proposal

•  Implementation

•  Evaluation

•  Reflection

•  Presentation

Stage One: Discernment

•  Pray

Good discernment takes place in an atmosphere of daily, serious prayer. By listening to the voice of the Spirit in our everyday lives, God makes his will known to us. The process of discernment should be a careful, prayerful deliberation.

•  Gather Information

The Project in Ministry offers students an opportunity to participate in the saving mission of Jesus Christ. This is accomplished by assessing the needs of the parish or other apostolates and by considering the personal gifts, talents, and background of the students.

During this process participants will review the parish mission statement and consult with the pastor, parish staff, and/or committee chairpersons to determine the unique needs of the parish. The participants also speak with friends, mentors, classmates and co-workers concerning their gifts and talents.

In this discernment process the participants remain open to the desires of their own hearts and receptive to God working through them.

•  Make Decision

In response to God' s working, in light of the needs surfaced, and in consideration of personal gifts, talents and ministerial skills, the participant chooses a Project in Ministry.

Stage Two: Commitment

•  Select the Project in Ministry

The participant fills in the Project in Ministry Commitment Form which summarizes the discernment process. The form provides a general idea of the project. When the proposal is formulated the project will become more specific and concrete.

•  Seek Pastor's Approval

The pastor of the parish continues to collaborate with the participant during this entire process. If the pastor approves the direction of the project, the participant asks him to sign the form. If he is not in agreement the student will seek his assistance in reshaping the project.

•  Select a Project Advisor

The participant selects someone who can serve as the Project in Ministry Advisor. This could be the pastor, a member of the parish staff, or a parish committee chairperson. The project is discussed with the advisor and then the form is signed by him/her.

Responsibilities of the Project Advisor

1. To assist the participant in assessing the needs of the parish or other related apostolate
2. To validate the participant' s choice of need
3. To brainstorm possible responses to the need
4. To sign Project in Ministry Commitment, Proposal and Evaluation Forms
5. To read and make recommendations for the Project Proposal
6. To consult with and support the participant towards completion of the project
7. To meet with participant for evaluation after completion of project
