Mission Presentations
Summer 2010
Hands Together representative Vincent Gallagher visited La Salle Academy in Philadelphia. Mr. Gallagher shared pictures and stories of children living on the street in Columbia and Peru. According to the United Nations, over 100 million children live on the streets worldwide. Mr. Gallagher also related his experience as a volunteer with Hands Together in Cite Soleil, Haiti. He told the HCA members at La Salle Academy, “The Kingdom of God is within you. This shows when we care for one another.”
Mr. Gallagher addresses La Salle Academy students.
Father Michael Useni, a priest of the Diocese of Chikwawa, and the National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Malawi, visited the Vacation Bible School at St. Joseph Parish in Aston. After meeting the children and accepting their donation to HCA and a gift of rosaries for the children of Malawi, Father Useni sent the following note:
2nd July 2010
Dear Holy Childhood Friends of St. Joseph – Aston,
Receive my warm greetings and best wishes. I sincerely thank you for giving me the opportunity to be with the children and share the time, stories, dancing and jokes, not forgetting answering questions about Africa. The Church is indeed universal. Time passes so fast, I enjoyed it all.
Let me take this opportunity to congratulate you the animators and the teenage collaborators for your dedication, creativity and availability. Your work with and for the children is a great treasure for your Parish and the Church.
Thank you so much for your gifts; the children in Malawi will appreciate them. May the Good Lord bless you all.
United in the Mission,
Fr. Michael Useni
Volunteers traveling to the Project FIAT Mission in El Salvador, a ministry of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, were commissioned in a June 20 ceremony. The teenage and adult volunteers brought to El Salvador the prayers and offerings of the faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, including vestments donated to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, and rosaries made by students at St. Alphonsus School in Maple Glen.
Eighth grade students at St. Alphonsus School in Maple Glen volunteer one lunch period a week to make rosaries for the Missions. Pictured here are members of the Class of 2010 Rosary group.
