KEEPING THE LORD'S DAY

Hello. This is Cardinal Rigali.

In Psalm 118 we read these words, "This is the day ... the Lord has made: let us rejoice and be glad in it" (Ps 118:24). These words rightly describe Sunday, the first day of the week. The significance of Sunday is that it is the Lord's day, the day of the Resurrection, "'the fundamental feastday,' established not only to mark the succession of time but to reveal time's deeper meaning" (Dies Domini).

However in our day and age, we witness many pressures that draw people away from the true meaning and purpose of Sunday. It is our duty, and our privilege, to keep Sunday holy by sharing in the Eucharist and relaxing in a spirit of Christian joy and fraternity. By doing so, we imitate God and live out His plan for us.

May God bless you!
