RACISM

Hello, this is Cardinal Rigali.

On January 17, our nation celebrates the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This national holiday serves as an opportunity for all Americans to look deeply at the issue of racism.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus says, "I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." (John 13,34)

Loving one another means that we treat each other with dignity and respect, for every person is made in the image and likeness of God. The Catholic Church teaches that racism is a sin; that it violates the truth that we are all children of the same Father. May Dr. King's life and ministry inspire us to live as brothers and sisters of our loving God.

May God bless you!
