Season of Lent

Hello, this is Cardinal Rigali.

On this Wednesday, the season of Lent will begin with that simple yet profound gesture, the imposition of ashes. While Lent reminds us of our mortality and motivates us to repentance; it, nevertheless, invites us to new life in Christ.

While darkness may surround us in its many different forms, and our personal need for repentance may be great, it is Jesus' sacrifice that has overcome the world and conquered death. Through prayer, fasting, almsgiving and works of charity, we not only confront the world of darkness, but open ourselves to the power of Christ who offers every grace for perfection.

Through our penitential practices, may we find ourselves spiritually enriched and personally prepared to celebrate Easter and our new life in the risen Christ.

May God bless you all.
