Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua, Archbishop of Philadelphia, called for a Synod to be held in 2002.  A Synod gathers the members of the local Church to consider prayerfully and seriously the current state of the Church's life in order to create a vision and a plan for the future.

Please note that the Vatican directives for Diocesan Synods state that opinions, recommendations, or proposals of any kind that are contrary to the teaching of the Church or that are discordant with its laws and practices are not matters to be considered at a Diocesan Synod.  (cf.
