Eighth Synod of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia

The Eighth Synod was convoked by Archbishop Edmond F. Prendergast in 1912.  It met at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul on August 24, with Rev. Edmund Fitzmaurice acting as secretary.

The synod produced twenty-four decrees or statutes.  These first reaffirmed the decisions of the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore (1884) and the First Provincial Council of Philadelphia (1880), and confirmed the statutes made by the previous bishops and archbishops of Philadelphia.  It also provided for the appointment of five vicars forane to represent the archbishop.   Other legislation dealt with:

bulletsacramental matters, particularly the celebration of Sunday Mass;
bulletestablishment of "national" parishes for particular ethnic/language groups, and the right to attend them;
bulletthe importance of Catholic education in parishes, particularly schools of Christian doctrine on Sundays and other days during the week;
bulletannual visitation of parishioners in their homes;
bulletfinancial matters
