Fifth Synod of the Diocese of PhiladelphiaThe Fifth Synod was convoked by Bishop (St.) John Neumann in 1855. It was held on October 3, 4, and 5. This synod promulgated the decrees of the most recent Provincial Council of Baltimore, as well as several diocesan regulations. Discussion included the work of completing the diocesan Cathedral, and a formal request that the Holy See confirm Saints Peter and Paul as patrons of the diocese. Among the decrees of this synod was the appointment of counsellors to the bishop, and the establishment of the diocesan Chancery. Special attention was also paid to the establishment and care of parish schools, and to the Catholic education of the young. "The 1855 synod [also] spoke of churches that are served by many priests. It was recommended that one of the priests be on duty a week at a time to handle the calls at the rectory and the sick calls . . ." [Rev. James F.
