Fourth Synod of the Diocese of PhiladelphiaThe Fourth Synod was convoked in 1853 by Saint John Neumann, who became the fourth bishop of Philadelphia on March 28, 1852. This and subsequent synods convoked by Bishop Neumann illustrate the characteristics for which he has become well-known not only in Philadelphia, but throughout the nation and, indeed, the world. Synodal decrees focused first and foremost on the importance of faith in the life of the Christian. They likewise showed St. John's concern for Catholic education of children and adults.
