Sixth Synod of the Diocese of PhiladelphiaThe Sixth Synod was convoked by Bishop (St.) John Neumann in 1857. The two sessions were held in the private chapel of the bishop's residence, on October 28 and 29, 1857. Bishop James Wood, coadjutor bishop to Bishop Neumann, presided at both sessions. The Sixth Synod was attended by 114 priests; 32 were excused from participating. Among other decrees, this synod revoked (as of January 1, 1858), the general permission that had been given for every priest to say two Masses on Sundays and holy days of obligation; possibly, this was an indication that the number of priests in the diocese was increasing. Rev. Thomas Reardon acted as secretary to the Synod, and Rev. Richard O'Connor was assistant secretary.
