"Let the Oppressed Go Free: Breaking the Bonds of Addiction" The Conference will focus on the interplay between the sacred and the therapeutic dimensions of clinical pastoral care in addictions ministry with individuals and families. Issues of prevention, treatment and recovery will be addressed.

Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia, will deliver opening remarks and will be the principal celebrant and homilist for the closing Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.

Co-Sponsored by Catholic Health Care Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Saint John Vianney Center and Guest House Institute.

2010 SCHOLARSHIP BANQUET TO HONOR BISHOP MAGINNIS

The Archdiocesan Office for Black Catholics will hold a Banquet to support the Monsignor John Mitchell Memorial Scholarship on Friday, November 5, 2010, at the Sheraton Philadelphia Center City Hotel, 17th & Race Streets.

In 2008, Archdiocese of Philadelphia received a bequest to fund a scholarship in honor of Monsignor John T. Mitchell. Msgr. Mitchell served as a priest of the Archdiocese from 1939 – 1981. During that time, he was the Pastor of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Saint Francis de Sales Parishes in West Philadelphia, where he was known for his faithful ministry to African American Catholics. He also founded Saint Ignatius Nursing Home in West Philadelphia.

The Scholarship Fund has assisted 19 high school students since its founding.

This year’s honoree is Most Reverend Robert P. Maginnis, Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia and Founding Chairman of the Scholarship Fund.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Catholic Life Congress is an annual convocation of
the laity and religious, deacons and priests of the Archdiocese for the purpose of ongoing
faith formation to serve the mission of the Church. It provides an opportunity for all
participants to experience the unity, diversity and inclusivity of the local Church. Catholic Life Congress is being held at Archbishop Carroll High School, Radnor, Delaware County.

Soon the revised translation of the Roman Missal will be implemented in all the countries
of the English-speaking world. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Catholic Life Congress
2010 theme, Sacred Mysteries: Ever Ancient, Ever New, will focus on the preparation
and reception of these new Mass texts. This is a rich opportunity for us to renew our sense
of reverence and awe at the great Mystery celebrated in the Eucharist, to deepen our
sacramental spirituality and to learn more about the Mass. May the Liturgy, prayers and
presentations of this year’s Congress inspire you with a sense of the mystery and
sacredness of the Liturgy.
