Working together to provide quality, accessible and affordable Catholic education in our area

In order to insure quality, accessible, and affordable Catholic education in our area as we move into the 21st century, the Pastors, Principals and members of the lay parish communities of our area have begun a study that is intended to result in vital, viable and vigorous Catholic school(s) to serve the parish communities as they move into the future.

In a letter from Cardinal Rigali, His Eminence granted the request of the Pastors of our parishes to begin a study that could result in restructuring of their parish schools. His Eminence recognized that because all of our parishes are experiencing changes in enrollments and infant baptisms, the parishes need to develop a plan for their schools in order to insure the presence of affordable, quality, Catholic education in our area. A recommendation to insure that the children in our schools now and in the future, have access to affordable, quality Catholic education will be given to His Eminence next year.

What process will be used during the feasibility study?

- Each parish will form a school study committee of lay representatives, the principal and pastor. This committee will develop and share information about the educational ministry of’ the parish and consult with parishioners and school parents during the process.

- A Steering Committee of two lay representatives, the principal and the pastor will be formed from each parish school study committee. The Steering Committee will consult with the school study committee throughout the process and will develop proposals for consultation and eventual recommendation to the Cardinal.

- Over the next three months, the school study committee in each of the parishes will develop the most current information concerning enrollment for the 2005-2006 school year, finances, school facilities and projections for future enrollment.

- During the Fall 2005, the school study committee in each parish will gather information and identify possible options for the best way to provide excellent Catholic school(s) in the future.

- During the Fall 2005, one or more proposals will be presented to parishioners and school parents for their comment and suggestions.

- Following this consultation process the Steering Committee will evaluate feedback from the parishioners and school parents and prepare a recommendation for the future of Catholic education in our area.. This recommendation will be shared with you before it is forwarded to His Eminence for acceptance.

Who will represent us on our parish school study committee?

- Our parish lay & Religious representatives who have accepted the invitation to serve on the school study committee are: Elaine McKnight, Diane Malloy, Dorothy Maminski, Linda McNamee, Carolyn Bennett, Duane Rutkowski, Sister Rita Marie Aponik and Father Francis Gwiazda.

- They will help to create new Catholic education options that will create school(s) with strong Catholic identity that are academically excellent and financially viable.

- Two members will serve on the Steering Committee.

Will parishioners know what the committee is looking at?

Over the next few months, we will try to provide you with full information so that you can understand why a plan for the future needs of Catholic Education in our area needs to be developed. Some of the important facts are that in the last 5 years:

1. Our own school’s enrollment declined by 37 from 250 to 213.

2. Because there are fewer children the cost per pupil increased $680 from $1745 to $2425.

We know that with God everything is possible, but we must be open to listen to God to learn where He is leading us in this stage of the life of our parish.
