(Parish Release - 6/15-16/02)

Cluster 23 / Philadelphia-South Vicariate

St. Aloysius

St. Gabriel

St. Charles Borromeo

King of Peace

St. Edmond

St. Thomas Aquinas

Cardinal Bevilacqua has accepted the proposal which the Cluster 23 Implementation Team submitted in April regarding St. Aloysius and King of Peace parishes. The points of the proposal are as follows:

As of July 1, 2003, St. Aloysius Parish be suppressed (that is, closed). Parishioners become members of St. Gabriel Parish or the parish in whose boundaries they live.

  • As of July 1, 2003, St. Aloysius Church be used as a worship site of St. Gabriel Parish. In other words, the church building at 26th and Tasker Streets would still be called "St. Aloysius Church" (not parish) and would become part of the facilities of St. Gabriel Parish. It would be used for one Mass on Saturday evenings or Sunday mornings. Also, funeral Masses could be celebrated there.

  • As of July 1, 2004, King of Peace Parish be suppressed (that is, closed). Parishioners become members of St. Gabriel Parish or the parish in whose boundaries they live.

  • As of July 1, 2004, King of Peace Church be used as a worship site of St. Gabriel Parish. In other words, the church building at 26th and Wharton Streets would still be called "King of Peace Church" (not parish) and would become part of the facilities of St. Gabriel Parish. It would be used for one Mass on Saturday evenings or Sunday mornings. Also, funeral Masses could be celebrated there.

It is also understood, in accord with the recommendations presented, that the parishioners of St. Aloysius Parish (founded in 1894 for German Catholics) and King of Peace Parish (founded in 1926 for Italian Catholics) may choose to join the nearest German or Italian personal parish respectively.

His Eminence expressed his gratitude to the pastors and members of the Cluster 23 Implementation Team for their work in addressing the pastoral needs within the Cluster.
