Deacon Gravlin dies


Rev. Mr. John J. Gravlin, 72, a permanent deacon at St. Martin of Tours Parish in Philadelphia, died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, the day before he would have turned 73. He was ordained a deacon June 2, 1996, at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul. Deacon Gravlin’s funeral Mass was scheduled to be celebrated Monday, Oct. 31, at St. Martin of Tours Church. Sister Mary Bury

Sister Mary Samuella Bury, O.S.F., in her 69th year as a Bernardine Franciscan Sister, died Oct. 19, 2005. She was 87. Born in Philadelphia, Sister Mary Samuella was the former Eva S. Bury. In the Philadelphia Archdiocese, she served at St. Ladislaus and St. Josaphat in Philadelphia; St. Joseph the Worker, Fallsington; St. Hedwig, Chester; St. Titus, East Norriton; St. Mary, Conshohocken; Sacred Heart, Bridgeport, and St. Peter, Pottstown. The funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 24 at St. Joseph Villa, Reading.

Mary Croce
Mary D. Croce, 90, wife of the late Ralph Croce, died Oct. 14, 2005. The funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 19 at Our Lady of Calvary Church. She was the mother of Ralph R., Annette Schmidt, and Constance McCarthy.
Also survived by 10 grandchildren.

Sister Regina Hillman
Sister Regina Maris Hillman, I.H.M., the former Kathryn M. Hillman, died Oct. 8, 2005. She was 91. Born in Paulsboro, N.J., Sister Regina Maris served in elementary and secondary education. She was missioned in the Miami Archdiocese and the Allentown Diocese. She also served in Peru. The funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 11 at Camilla Hall, Immaculata. Burial was at Immaculata. Surviving are a sister, Mary Hillman, a nephew, and members of her congregation. She was predeceased by three brothers, Harvey, George and Edward; also a sister, Alice.

James Kilkenny
James J. Kilkenny, 80, of Andulusia, husband of the late Justine M. Kilkenny (born Kurth), died Oct. 11, 2005. Mr. Kilkenny was a former manager of the Latin Casino and the Pub Restaurant. He retired in 2001 from Philadelphia Park in Bensalem. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marines. The funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 17 at St. Martin of Tours Church. Burial was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham. He was the father of Kevin, Justine and the late Michael D. Also survived by 10 grandchildren. He was a brother of Thomas, Anna Mae Topley, Helen Robinson, Mary Coppola and Agnes Stakelbeck.

Sister Dolores Loughrey
Sister Dolores Mary Loughrey, I.H.M., the former Mary J. Loughrey, died Oct. 5, 2005, at the age of 88. Born in Philadelphia, Sister Dolores Mary served in elementary and secondary education in the Philadelphia Archdiocese and the Allentown Diocese. She also served at Immaculata University. The funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 10 at Camilla Hall, Immaculata. Burial was at Immaculata. Surviving are nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grand nephews, and members of her congregation. She was predeceased by three brothers, Charles, John and Mark; also a sister, Catherine.

Margaret Mallon
Margaret M. Mallon (born Buckley), wife of the late Henry F. Mallon, died Oct. 16, 2005. The funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 20 at St. John Bosco Church, Hatboro. Burial was at St. John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont. She was the mother of Brian, Ronald, Celeste Coyle, Vincent, Patrice Furness, the late Karen Hahn and Kerry Mallon. Also survived by 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Father James Mulhern
Father James P. Mulhern, O.F.M., 94, a Franciscan Friar for 66 years, died Oct. 21, 2005 at St. Petersburg, Fla. Born in Philadelphia, Father Mulhern served in New York, New Jersey and Florida. He retired in 1976 to St. Anthony Friary, St. Petersburg, Fla. The funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 26 at St. Mary, Our Lady of Grace Church, St. Petersburg. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery, North Clearwater, Fla. Surviving is a cousin.

Helen Sawicki
Helen C. Sawicki (born Koniecki), wife of the late Joseph Sawicki, died Oct. 16, 2005. The funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 20 at St. John Cantius Church. Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem. She was the mother of Maryann Towne, William, Francis A. and the late Thomas. Also survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was a sister of Frances Klawiter.

John Somers Jr.
John I. Somers Jr., 85, retired owner of the Industrial Lift Truck Co., died Oct. 16, 2005. He was the former husband of Mary E. Somers. Mr. Somers was a graduate of West Catholic Boys’ High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. The funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 19 at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, Bryn Mawr. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon. He was the father of Christine E. Somers, Susan Colleran, Elizabeth Ottaay and John I. Somers III. Also survived by eight grandchildren. He was a brother of Joseph V. Somers.
