I was in prison and you visited me. Mt. 25: 36
Adeodatus, a name which means “gift of God,” was the son of St. Augustine and grew up under rather difficult circumstances before dying at a young age. The Adeodatus Prison Ministry, under the direction of Fr. Paul F. Morrissey, OSA, endeavors to foster the awareness of Christ in the lives of those on both sides of the prison walls. We name ourselves after Adeodatus to remember Augustine’s son, and many young people in prison who nevertheless are “Gifts of God.” The Adeodatus Spiritual Support Group for ex inmates and their families meets once a week in communal fellowship at St. Rita's parish, 1166 South Broad St. (at Ellsworth), from 7:30 - 9 pm.
Adeodatus Prison Ministry publishes a quarterly newsletter, Voices from Prison, which provides inspiring testimony from inmates in their quest for spiritual health, and delivers it to local Philadelphia parishes. Written in the spirit of St. Augustine’s Confessions, the newsletter hopes to evoke a link between the spiritual quest of the inmates and that of its readers. Voices from Prison can be found both in print and on the Adeodatus Prison Ministry website where a dialogue is fostered on our blog—let us hear your voice! You may download the newsletter for your parish, school or family discussion group.
