Lt. Governor Schweiker will be joined by dignitaries from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, students from St. Maria Goretti High School and Jules E. Mastbaum High School, and representatives from Microsoft Corporation.
Jules E. Mastbaum High School, host of the Pennsylvania Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) initiative as well as the national rollout of the Microsoft Office 2000 tests, currently is testing students for MOUS certification. Since July 1998 more than 100,000 people worldwide have taken MOUS certification exams. Candidates who pass are given a certificate that denotes their skills on certain Microsoft programs. To employers, these certificates may mean the difference in hiring a potential job candidate. To end-users, having the added knowledge is a marketable skill they can promote when seeking a job.
St. Maria Goretti High School, an all-girls high school located in South Philadelphia, is the first school in the nation to integrate the MOUS program into its curriculum. Sister M. Sheila Foy, along with students from St. Maria Goretti, will be attending the rollout to share their MOUS experiences and answer questions.
