STEWARDS OF SAINT JOHN NEUMANN RECEIVE $10,000 GRANT

TO ASSIST INNOVATIVE MUSIC PROGRAM
The Stewards of Saint John Neumann, a group of lay leaders in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, are pleased to announce that they received a $10,000 grant to assist the Music Education Program at The Catholic Institute for Evangelization in North Philadelphia. The grant, from The Leo Niessen, Jr. Charitable Foundation, will be used to purchase and maintain musical instruments and cover other operational costs for this unique program.
The Catholic Institute for Evangelization of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is located in the heart of North Philadelphia (4404 North Fifth Street, Philadelphia) and focuses primarily on the Hispanic community. It helps children and adults learn more about their faith through pastoral programs. In 2000, the Institute launched the Music Education Program. The program opens up a brand new world for children and teenagers, mostly those at-risk due to a variety of social, financial and environmental disadvantages, who would never otherwise be exposed to music theory or learn to play an instrument. The program has an enrollment of over 100 students, 80 percent of whom are Hispanic. This program fills a void; there is no other program in this community to offer instruction on proper performance technique and education in music theory.
The Stewards of Saint John Neumann are a group of more than 180 lay men and women who share their gifts of time, talent and treasure to advance programs that foster spiritual and social growth. The Stewards of Saint John Neumann serve the Archdiocese through their active participation in numerous institutions and programs including Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, the Board of Directors of Catholic Social Services, BLOCS (Business Leadership Organized for Catholic Schools) and the Catholic Charities Appeal.
The Leo Niessen, Jr. Charitable Foundation supports organizations working for young people as well as religious organizations that provide spiritual and emotional guidance to the humanities. The foundation also awards grants to organizations seeking to educate the less fortunate.
