"PEACE DAY" KICKS OFF
SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM

Peace is the theme for the Summer Food Service Program of Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The theme was chosen in response to the escalating violence toward young people in the Philadelphia Region in the past several months. On "Peace Day" children participating in the program will have the opportunity to be involved in peace-themed activities including collage making, book sharing, and crafts.

The Summer Food Service Program provides nutritious meals and teaches lessons on healthy eating to thousands of area children.

The Summer Food Service Program serves children regardless of religion. Approximately 90 percent are non-Catholic. 100 children attend Mt. Airy Church of God in Christ each day. Mt. Other sites include camps, bible schools and enrichment programs.

The children receive either breakfast and a snack or breakfast and lunch. The free meals consist of sandwiches, milk and fresh fruit. The program also teaches children about nutrition and fitness.

The Summer Food Service Program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and is sponsored in the Philadelphia area by Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Department of Recreation and the Philadelphia Housing Authority.
