ARCHDIOCESE OF PHILADELPHIA CELEBRATES MINISTRY TO AFRICAN AMERICANS AND THE FEAST OF SAINT PETER CLAVER

Mass celebrating ministry to African American Catholics will take place at the Saint Peter Claver Center for Evangelization. The Mass commemorates the ministry of Saint Peter Claver, a 17th century missionary who dedicated his life to serving African Americans.

The main celebrant and homilist for the Mass will be Most Reverend Guy Sansaricq, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, New York and Vicar for Black Catholic Concerns. Bishop Sansaricq is the first Haitian Bishop of the Catholic Church. Also participating will be Most Reverend Robert P. Maginnis, Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, priests and deacons who serve in the African American Catholic community and the Haitian Community Choir.

The Saint Peter Claver Center for Evangelization, under the direction of Mr. John Keith White, was founded on September 1, 1995, and serves as a place for workshops, retreats and other gatherings to promote the Catholic faith among African Americans.
