REVEREND JAMES V. LEARY
1929-2008


Reverend James V. Leary, Retired and Resident, Saint Francis Country House, Darby, died of aspiration pneumonia at Saint Francis Country House, on Wednesday, January 9, 2008.

Father Leary was born on May 21, 1929, in Bridgeport, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late Vincent J. Leary and the late Alice Shuttleworth. Father Leary attended Saint Augustine Parochial School, Bridgeport, and Saint Patrick High School, Norristown, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Father Leary was ordained on May 10, 1956, at Immaculate Conception Church, Germantown, by Most Reverend John F. O'Hara. Father Leary served on the faculty at Saint Pius X High School, Pottstown. He also served as Parochial Vicar at Saint Joseph Parish, Girardsville; Saint Joseph Parish, Reading; Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Allentown; Saint Michael the Archangel Parish, Levittown; Saint Kevin Parish, Springfield; Saint Joseph Parish, Collingdale; Saint Callistus Parish, Philadelphia; Presentation B.V.M. Parish, Wynnewood; Saint Matthias Parish, Bala Cynwyd; and Saint John Bosco Parish, Hatboro. Father Leary retired from active ministry in 1996.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Justin Rigali at Saint Francis Country House, Darby, on Saturday, January 12, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be held beginning at 9:00 a.m. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Monsignor John M. Galyo, Reverend Monsignor James P. McBride, Reverend John E. Mulgrew, and Reverend Monsignor John A. Sharkey. Monsignor McBride will be the homilist.

Father Leary is survived by his sister, Constance (William) Richey, his brother, John (Elaine), and nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Saint Augustine Cemetery, Bridgeport.
