Philadelphia Mayor to speak on volunteerism and good citizenship
Mayor Michael Nutter will visit St. Martin of Tours parish school in Northeast Philadelphia from 9am to 10am on Wednesday, April 9 to present to the school's fifth, sixth, seventh and eight graders on the importance of volunteerism and good citizenship in the city of Philadelphia.
Mayor Nutter was invited to visit St. Martin of Tours by his first grade teacher, Sister Angelica Marie, IHM. Sister Angelica, who taught at Transfiguration of Our Lord Catholic elementary school where Mayor Nutter attended grade school, is now retired. She volunteers at St. Martin of Tours and wrote to her former student to congratulate him on his victory and invite him to the school. "It was such a thrill to see one of my students ascend to the highest office in the city of Philadelphia," says Sister Angelica Marie. "Mayor Nutter's commitment to education and to the children of this city is evident in his taking the time to visit our school."

Volunteerism and education are major issues that the Nutter administration has highlighted since the Mayor's inauguration in January. On April 5, 125 St. Martin students participated in Philly Spring Cleanup, a day-long volunteer event coordinated by the Mayor's office to collect litter and clean up public areas throughout the city.
"Mayor Nutter will inspire and engage our student body to be more active participants in their communities, in our school, and in all other areas of their lives," Reverend John J. Kelly, Pastor of St. Martin Parish, said. "He is an inspiring example of the strong foundation that a child receives from a Catholic education rooted in gospel values."
