Reverend William J. Stanton, Pastor Emeritus, Seven Dolors Parish, Wyndmoor, died of acute renal failure at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, Darby, on Wednesday, March 12, 2008.
Father Stanton was born on February 27, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late William C. Stanton and the late Florence M. Loughlin. Father Stanton attended Waldron Academy, Our Lady of Lourdes Parochial School, and Saint Joseph Preparatory School before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Father Stanton was ordained on May 10, 1952, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John F. O'Hara. Father Stanton served as Parochial Vicar at Saint Bernard Parish, Easton; Saint Joseph Parish, Girardsville; Saint Francis of Assisi Parish, Philadelphia; and Saint Richard Parish, Philadelphia. Father Stanton served on the faculty of Roman Catholic High School and Cardinal Dougherty High School, Philadelphia. He also served as Chaplain, Immaculata College and Newman Chaplain, Temple University Newman Center. From 1978 to 1985 Father Stanton served as Pastor, Holy Angels Parish, Philadelphia, and from1985 to 1989 he served as Pastor, Saint Ambrose Parish, Philadelphia. In 1989, Father Stanton was appointed Pastor, Seven Dolors Parish, Wyndmoor, and named Pastor Emeritus in June 2000.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Justin Rigali at Seven Dolors Church, Wyndmoor, on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be held at the Church beginning at 9:00 a.m. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend George J. Boyle, Reverend Henry C. Graf, Reverend Monsignor John J. Miller, Reverend Monsignor William J. J. O'Donnell, and Reverend William J. Teverzczuk. Monsignor Miller will be the homilist.
Father Stanton is survived by his cousins. He is preceded in death by his sister, Marie Louise Stanton. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Philadelphia.
