Reverend Monsignor Alexander J. Palmieri died of Respiratory Failure at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, Darby, on Saturday, August 1, 2009.
Monsignor Palmieri was born on December 11, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late Alexander J. Palmieri, Sr., and the late Rose Iaquinto. Monsignor Palmieri attended Saint Monica and Saint Gabriel Parochial Schools, Philadelphia, and Bishop Neumann High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Monsignor Palmieri was ordained on May 15, 1976, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by His Eminence John Cardinal Krol, and named Honorary Prelate to His Holiness Pope John Paul II on March 14, 1998. Monsignor Palmieri served as Parochial Vicar at Saints Cosmas and Damian Parish, Conshohocken; Saint Donato Parish, Philadelphia; and Saint Catherine of Siena Parish, Horsham. Monsignor Palmieri served as Vicar for Consecrated Life from 1993 through 2009, and as Chancellor from 1996 through 2009.
The service of the Transfer of the Body will be held at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Merion Station, on Thursday, August 6, 2009, at 4:00 PM, followed by a viewing. Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 PM. His Eminence Cardinal Justin Rigali will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Monsignor Palmieri at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paulon Friday, August 7, 2009, at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held beginning at 9:00 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Reverend Monsignor William J. Lynn, Reverend Monsignor John C. Marine, Reverend Monsignor Michael T. McCulken, Reverend James E. McVeigh, and Reverend Monsignor Tomas Marin, Archdiocese of Miami. Bishop Burbidge will be the homilist.
Monsignor Palmieri is survived by his sister, Mrs. Roseann Carroll (John P.), and nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Interment will be at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield.
