Reverend Monsignor Bernard J. Herron, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Barnabas Parish, Philadelphia, died of a Heart Attack at Villa Saint Joseph, Darby, on Saturday, August 29, 2009.
Monsignor Herron was born on October 8, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late Daniel Herron and the late Beatrice Allen. Monsignor Herron attended Transfiguration Parochial School and West Catholic High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Monsignor Herron was ordained on May 8, 1954, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John F. O'Hara, and named Honorary Prelate to His Holiness Pope John Paul II on March 14, 1998. Monsignor Herron served as Parochial Vicar at Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish, Coaldale; Saint Christopher Parish, Philadelphia; and Saint Pius X Parish, Broomall. He served on the faculty at Cardinal Dougherty High School, Philadelphia, and also served as Principal at Archbishop Kennedy High School, Conshohocken. In 1989, Monsignor Herron was appointed Pastor, Saint Barnabas Parish, Philadelphia, and named Pastor Emeritus there in 2003.
The service of the Transfer of the Body will be held at Saint Barnabas Church, Philadelphia, on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at 4:00 PM, followed by a viewing. A parish Mass will be held at 7:30 PM. His Eminence Cardinal Justin Rigali will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Monsignor Herron at Saint Barnabas Church, Philadelphia, on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held beginning at 8:30 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Francis X. Herron, Reverend Monsignor Joseph P. Herron, Diocese of Camden, Reverend John F. Babowitch, Reverend George G. Hagenbach, Reverend James E. McVeigh, and Reverend Monsignor Bernard J. Trinity. Monsignor Joseph Herron will be the homilist.
Monsignor Herron is survived by his brothers, Reverend Francis X. Herron and Reverend Monsignor Joseph P. Herron, Diocese of Camden, his sister-in-law, Mary T. Herron, and nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon.
