Reverend Monsignor Charles V. Devlin, Retired and Resident, Nativity B.V.M. Parish, Media, died of Burkitts Lymphoma at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, Darby, on Monday, February 15, 2010.
Monsignor Devlin was born on November 26, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late John F. Devlin and the late Veronica M. Hennessey. Monsignor Devlin attended Notre Dame Academy Parochial School and LaSalle College High School before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Monsignor Devlin was ordained on May 19, 1955, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John F. O'Hara, and named Honorary Prelate of His Holiness Pope Paul VI, on January 18, 1976. He was named Protonotary Apostolic on March 24, 2003. Monsignor Devlin served as Parochial Vicar at Saint Patrick Parish, Pottsville; Saint Francis of Assisi Parish, Norristown; Our Lady of Ransom Parish, Philadelphia; and Saint Bartholomew Parish, Philadelphia. In 1973, Monsignor Devlin was appointed Executive Director, Cardinal's Commission on Human Relations, and in June 1982, he was appointed Pastor, Saint John the Evangelist Parish, Philadelphia, where he served for seven years. In July 1989, Monsignor Devlin was appointed Regional Vicar, Philadelphia - North, and in September 1997, he was appointed Vicar for Renewal and Evangelization. In December 2003, he was appointed Director, Society for the Propagation of the Faith.
The service of the Transfer of the Body will be held at Nativity B.V.M. Church, Media, on Friday, February19, 2010, at 4:00 PM, followed by a viewing. Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 PM.
His Eminence Cardinal Justin Rigali will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Monsignor Devlin at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held beginning at 9:00 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Edward H. Bell, Reverend Michael A. Chapman, Reverend Charles E. Gormley, and Reverend Monsignor Daniel J. Sullivan. Father Bell will be the homilist.
Monsignor Devlin is survived by his nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Saint John the Evangelist Parish Cemetery, Philadelphia.
