A CELEBRATION IN THANKSGIVING FOR THE SERVICE OF
BISHOP JOSEPH MCFADDEN, AUXILIARY BISHOP OF PHILADELPHIA

Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia, will celebrate Solemn Evening Prayer and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament in thanksgiving for the service of Bishop Joseph McFadden on the occasion of his appointment as the Tenth Bishop of Harrisburg on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 18th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Bishop McFadden will preach. An Open House Reception will follow in the Archdiocesan Office Center. All are welcome to attend Solemn Evening Prayer and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament and the Open House Reception.

On Tuesday, June 22, 2010, Cardinal Rigali held a news conference announcing that Pope Benedict XVI had appointed Bishop Joseph McFadden the tenth Bishop of Harrisburg. Bishop McFadden was ordained by Cardinal John Krol in 1981.

Bishop McFadden, 63, is a native of Philadelphia. He attended and was ordained a priest in 1981. He served as Administrative Secretary to Cardinal John Krol from 1982 to 1993. He was ordained a bishop in 2004 assisting Cardinal Rigali with the pastoral and administrative care of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
A Philadelphia native, Bishop McFadden attended Our Lady of Lourdes Parish School and Saint Thomas More High School for Boys. Following graduation from St. Joseph's University, he became a teacher at West Catholic High School for Boys where he also coached basketball. He then attended St. Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Editor's Note: On June 22, 2010 Cardinal Rigali announced that Pope Benedict XVI named Bishop Joseph P. McFadden as Bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg, and appointed Monsignor Michael Fitzgerald as Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia. Cardinal Rigali also announced on June 8, 2010 that Pope Benedict XVI appointed Monsignor John J. McIntyre as an Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia Bishop McIntyre and Bishop Fitzgerald were ordained to the episcopacy on August 6, 2010 at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.
