REVEREND MONSIGNOR THOMAS J. SCANLON

1931 - 2010



Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Scanlon, Retired and Resident, Saint Mary Manor, Lansdale, died of a cerebral vascular accident at Saint Mary Manor, on Monday, August 30, 2010.

Monsignor Scanlon was born on February 12, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late William S. Scanlon and the late Irene W. Murphy. Monsignor Duane attended Saint Bartholomew Parochial School, Philadelphia, and Northeast Catholic High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Monsignor Scanlon was ordained on May 7, 1959, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by His Eminence John Cardinal O'Hara, and named Honorary Prelate to His Holiness Pope John Paul II on May 29, 1991. Monsignor Scanlon served as Parochial Vicar at Saint Thomas the Apostle Parish, Chester Heights; Saint Francis of Assisi Parish, Norristown; Nativity B.V.M. Parish, Philadelphia; and Saint Titus Parish, East Norriton. Monsignor Scanlon served on the Faculty at Cardinal Dougherty High School, Philadelphia, and at Bishop McDevitt High School, Wyncote. He also served as Rector at Saint Joseph's-in-the-Hills Retreat House, Malvern. Monsignor Scanlon served as Pastor, Resurrection of Our Lord Parish, Philadelphia, from 1989 through 1996.

The Reception of the Body will be held at Saint Titus Church, East Norriton, on Friday, September 3, 2010, at 9:00 AM, followed by a viewing. In the absence of Cardinal Rigali, Most Reverend Michael J. Fitzgerald will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Monsignor Scanlon at Saint Titus Church, East Norriton, on Friday, September 3, 2010, at 11:00 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend James Goeke, S.J., Archdiocese of St. Louis, Reverend Monsignor Thomas A. Murray, Reverend Monsignor Francis X. Schmidt, Reverend Monsignor Daniel J. Sullivan, and Reverend Edward A. Windhaus. Father Goeke will be the homilist.

Monsignor Scanlon is survived by his sisters, Gerri Ibberson and Mary Goeke and his nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
