Reverend Monsignor Arthur W. Nugent, Pastor Emeritus, Saint John of the Cross Parish, Roslyn, died at his residence, on February 10, 2011.
Monsignor Nugent was born on February 28, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late John J. Nugent and the late Caroline Volkert. Monsignor Nugent attended Saint Edward Parochial School, Philadelphia; Saint Athanasius Parochial School, Philadelphia; and Northeast Catholic High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Monsignor Nugent was ordained on May 31, 1947, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend Hugh L. Lamb, and named Honorary Prelate to His Holiness Pope John Paul II on April 24, 1982. Monsignor Nugent served as Parochial Vicar at Saint Patrick Parish, Pottsville, and Saint Michael Parish, Chester. Monsignor Nugent also served on the faculty at Roman Catholic High School, Philadelphia, and as Principal at Bishop Shanahan High School, Downingtown, and West Catholic Girls High School, Philadelphia. In June 1974, Monsignor Nugent was appointed Pastor, Saint John of the Cross Parish, Roslyn, and named Pastor Emeritus there in 1996.
The Reception of the Body will be held at Saint John of the Cross Church, Roslyn, on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at 4:00 PM, followed by a viewing. A parish Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 PM. His Eminence Cardinal Justin Rigali will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Monsignor Nugent at Saint John of the Cross Church, Roslyn, on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held from 8:45-10:45 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Most Reverend Edward Hughes, Reverend Thomas Feeney, Reverend John J. Kilgallon, Reverend John Reardon, and Reverend Monsignor Daniel Sullivan. Father Reardon will be the homilist.
Monsignor Nugent is survived by his close friends, Robert and Judy Lounsberry. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Philadelphia.
