Reverend John M. Walsh, Retired and Resident, Villa Saint Joseph, Darby, died at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, Darby, on March 23, 2011.
Father Walsh was born on March 3, 1914, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late John J. Walsh and the late Catherine Gaynard. Father Walsh attended Saint Columba Parochial School, and Roman Catholic High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Father Walsh was ordained on May 31, 1947, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend Hugh L. Lamb. Father Walsh served as Parochial Vicar, Saint Patrick Parish, McAdoo; Saint Joseph Parish, Frackville; Saint Catherine of Siena Parish, Reading; Saint Cecilia Parish, Coatesville; Saint William Parish, Philadelphia; Saint James Parish, Philadelphia; Holy Child Parish, Philadelphia; Resurrection of Our Lord Parish, Philadelphia; and Saint Barnabas Parish, Philadelphia. In 1975, Father Walsh was appointed Pastor, Saint Cecilia Parish, Coatesville. He retired in 1981.
The Transfer of the Body will be held at Saint Francis Country House, Darby, on Monday, March 28, 2011, at 10:00 AM, followed by a viewing. In the absence of Cardinal Rigali, Most Reverend Robert P. Maginnis will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father Walsh at Saint Francis Country House, Darby, on Monday, March 28, 2011, at 11:00 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Most Reverend Edward T. Hughes, Bishop Emeritus, Diocese of Metuchen, New Jersey, Reverend Monsignor William A. Dombrow, Reverend Monsignor Daniel J. Sullivan, and Reverend Monsignor Gerard Mesure. Monsignor Mesure will be the homilist.
Father Walsh is survived by his niece Katherine M. Gallagher; and nephews; Reverend Monsignor Gerard C. Mesure, William, John, Joseph, Thomas and Stephen Mesure. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Philadelphia..
