REVEREND MONSIGNOR JAMES P. MATTEO

1944 - 2011


Reverend Monsignor James P. Matteo, Pastor Emeritus, Queen of Peace Parish, Ardsley, died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, on Friday, April 1, 2011.

Monsignor Matteo was born on April 18, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late Joseph Matteo and Margaret Haggerty. Monsignor Matteo attended Saint Edmond Parochial School, Philadelphia, and Bishop Neumann High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Monsignor Matteo was ordained on May 20, 1972, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by His Eminence John Cardinal Krol, and named Chaplain to His Holiness Pope John Paul II on March 24, 2003. Monsignor Matteo served as Parochial Vicar at Mother of Divine Grace Parish, Philadelphia; Our Lady of Consolation Parish, Philadelphia; Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia; Saint Monica Parish, Philadelphia; Queen of Peace Parish, Ardsley; and Immaculate Conception Parish, Levittown. He also served as Parochial Administrator at Saint Stephen Parish, Philadelphia. Monsignor Matteo served as Pastor, Saint Joan of Arc Parish, Philadelphia, from 1993 through 1998. In June 1998, Monsignor Matteo was appointed Pastor, Queen of Peace Parish, Ardsley, and named Pastor Emeritus there in 2009.

The Reception of the Body will be held at Queen of Peace Church, Ardsley, on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at 4:00 PM, followed by a viewing. A parish Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 PM. His Eminence Cardinal Justin Rigali will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Monsignor Matteo at Queen of Peace Church, Ardsley, on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held beginning at 9:00 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Most Reverend Herbert A. Bevard, Diocese of Saint Thomas, Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, Archdiocese of Louisville, Reverend Andrew C. Brownholtz, Reverend Monsignor Philip J. Cribben, Reverend James R. DeGrassa, Reverend Victor J. Eschbach, Reverend Monsignor James J. Howard, Reverend William C. Kaufman, Reverend Monsignor Charles P. Vance, Reverend Robert C. Vogan, and Reverend Monsignor Robert J. Wargo, Diocese of Allentown. Father Eschbach will be the homilist.

Monsignor Matteo is survived by his brother, Joseph (Florence), his sisters, Marie DiGiuseppe, Margaret Wozniak, Maureen (Ralph) Colaberdino, and Patricia (Robert) Keller and many nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Conshohocken.
