Reverend Joseph W. Callahan, Retired, Resident, Villa Saint Joseph, Darby, died at Villa Saint Joseph on Sunday, March 25, 2012.
Father Callahan was born on June 18, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late Joseph Anthony Callahan and the late Margaret M. Doyle. Father Callahan attended Good Shepherd Parochial School, Philadelphia, West Philadelphia Catholic High School, and La Salle College, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Father Callahan was ordained on May 21, 1966, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John J. Krol. Father Callahan served as Parochial Vicar at Saint John the Evangelist Parish, Morrisville; Assumption B.V.M. Parish, Philadelphia; and Saint Timothy Parish, Philadelphia. Father Callahan served on the Faculty at Cardinal Dougherty High School from 1969 through 1991. He retired from active ministry in February 2002.
The Reception of the Body will be held at Saint Dorothy Church, Drexel Hill, on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 8:45 AM, followed by a viewing. Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father Callahan at Saint Dorothy Church, Drexel Hill, on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 10:30 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend James J. Collins, Reverend Peter J. Foley, Reverend Michael D. Murphy, Reverend Monsignor Michael C. Picard, Reverend Charles J. Sullivan, and Very Reverend Georges G. Thiers, C.O. Father Murphy will be the homilist.
Father Callahan is survived by his sister Judy (Larry) Haines and his nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
