Deacon Boleslaw S. Wojewodka, retired Permanent Deacon, died on Saturday, September 8, 2012.
Deacon Wojewodka was born on May 14, 1923, in the village of Siekiewiczowka near Tarnopol in what was then a part of Poland. He was attending a military academy when in February 1940 he was taken from his home along with his family by the Russians. He joined the Polish Army under British command and made his way through the Middle East to Great Britain. As a member of the Polish Independent Parachute Brigade which supported the British 1st Airborne Division he took part in the battle of Arnhem, Holland, where he was seriously wounded. He retired from the military and he holds the rank of Major. He earned Gold and Silver Crosses of Merit and British and Holland Tour of Duty medals.
Deacon Wojewodka graduated from the Polish Commercial College in Glasgow, Scotland in 1948. He received diplomas from the School of Foreign Trade in London and the Polish School of Politics and Social Sciences. He attended Hofstra University in New York where he earned a Bachelor=s degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting and a minor in Finance.
Deacon Wojewodka was ordained a permanent deacon on May 29, 1988, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend Anthony J. Bevilacqua. Deacon Wojewodka served as Permanent Deacon at Saint Hedwig Parish, Chester; Saint Katharine Drexel Parish, Chester, and Sacred Heart Parish, Clifton Heights. He retired in July 2007.
A Viewing will be held on Friday, September 14, 2012, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Kaniefski, Kendus and DAnjolell Funeral Home, 3900 W. 9th Street, Trainer, PA 19061. Most Reverend Daniel E. Thomas will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Deacon Wojewodka on Saturday, September 15, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., at Saint Hedwig Church, 2623 W. 4th Street, Chester. The Concelebrant and Homilist at the Mass will be Reverend James Joseph Kelly. Deacon of the Word and Deacon of the Eucharist will be his classmates.
Deacon Wojewodka's wife Michaelina died in 2004. He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Ostapowicz and Lidia Manieri as well as five grandsons.
Interment will take place at Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery, Doylestown.
