Deacon James T. Walker, retired Permanent Deacon, died on Tuesday, September 18, 2012.
Deacon Walker was born on October 7, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan. He was a United States Army Veteran who served during World War II. While serving in the Army, Jimmy met his late wife, Bernice Washington After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, Deacon Walker was an accountant at the U. S. Naval Depot, where he received several commendations for his outstanding job performance. After 30 years of service, he retired in 1980. He continued his education and earned an Associates Degree in Accounting from Trenton State Community College.
Deacon Walker was ordained a permanent deacon on May 24, 1987, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend Martin N. Lohmuller. He was assigned to Saint Benedict Parish, Philadelphia, and ministered there for 16 years until his retirement in December 2003.
A viewing will be held at Saint Benedict Church, Philadelphia, on Saturday, September 22, 2012, beginning at 9:00 AM. Most Reverend Michael J. Fitzgerald will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Deacon Walker at Saint Benedict Church, Philadelphia, on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. The concelebrant and homilist will be Reverend George B. Moore. Deacon of the Mass will be Deacon James Mahoney.
Deacon Walker is survived by his son, James G. Walker, two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Interment will take place at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia.
