REVEREND JOHN P. GALLAGHER

1931 - 2013


Reverend John P. Gallagher, Pastor Emeritus, Saint John Baptist Vianney Parish, Gladwyne, and Resident, Villa Saint Joseph, Darby, died at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, on Sunday, February 24, 2013.

Father Gallagher was born on December 31, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late James J. Gallagher and the late Ann McLaughlin. Father Gallagher attended Saint William Parochial School, Philadelphia, and Northeast Catholic High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Father Gallagher was ordained on May 11, 1957, at Immaculate Conception Church, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend John F. O'Hara, C.S.C. Father Gallagher served as Parochial Vicar at Saint Nicholas Parish, Weatherly. He also served as a Faculty member and Vice Principal at Cardinal Dougherty High School, Philadelphia. Father Gallagher served as a Visiting Professor in Education at the National University of Ireland for one year. He also served as Pastor, Saint Philip Neri Parish, Pennsburg, from 1985-1993. In June 1993, Father Gallagher was appointed Pastor, Saint John Baptist Vianney Parish, Gladwyne, and named Pastor Emeritus there in June 2001. He also served as Senior Priest at Saint Albert the Great Parish, Huntingdon Valley.

The Reception of the Body will be held at Saint John Baptist Vianney Church, Gladwyne, on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 8:45 AM, followed by a viewing. Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father Gallagher at Saint John Baptist Vianney Church, Gladwyne, on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 10:00 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Thomas J. Brennan, Reverend Monsignor Paul F. Curran, Reverend Monsignor James P. McBride, and Reverend Monsignor James P. McCoy. Monsignor McBride will be the homilist.

Father Gallagher is survived by his sister-in-law Katherine, his niece, nephew, great niece, and cousins. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Philadelphia.
