Reverend Edmund J. Maher, Retired, Resident, Saint Mary Manor, Lansdale, died at Saint Mary Manor, on Tuesday, February 26, 2013.
Father Maher was born on January 1, 1929, in New York City, New York. He is the son of the late Bernard J. Maher and the late Evelyn M. Feeney. Father Maher attended Niagara University, LaSalle University and Temple University. He taught junior high school in the Philadelphia public school system for 32 years before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Father Maher was ordained on May 21, 1988, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend Anthony J. Bevilacqua. Father Maher served as Parochial Vicar, Saint Bernadette Parish, Drexel Hill, and Stella Maris Parish, Philadelphia. He also served as Moderator of the Philadelphia Catholic Guild for All Blind; Chaplain, Catholic League for Physically Disabled People; Chaplain, Knights of Columbus Philadelphia Chapter; and Chaplain of the Blessed Cardinal Newman Alumni Group.
The Reception of the Body will be held at Saint William Church, Philadelphia, on Monday, March 4, 2013, at 9:00 AM, followed by a viewing. Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father Maher at Saint William Church, Philadelphia, on Monday, March 4, 2013, at 11:00 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend James T. McGuinn,
Reverend Monsignor Joseph C. McLoone, Reverend Monsignor James E. Mortimer, Reverend James M. Oliver, Reverend James P. Olson, and Reverend John D. Schiele. Monsignor McLoone will be the homilist.
Father Maher is survived by his sisters, Joan Doyle, Evelyn Woltemate, and Bernadette Felix, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Philadelphia.
