Reverend John A. Freeman, Retired, died at Vitas Hospice, Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, Darby, on Saturday,
September 21, 2013.
Father Freeman was born on November 20, 1947, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late John Patrick Freeman and the late Mary Catherine Mulvaney. Father Freeman attended Saint Alice Parochial School, Upper Darby, and Monsignor Bonner High School, Drexel Hill, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Father Freeman was ordained on May 19, 1973, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by His Eminence John Cardinal Krol. Father Freeman served as Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Philadelphia; Saint John the Baptist Parish, Philadelphia; Saint Timothy Parish, Philadelphia; and Saint Andrew Parish, Newtown. Father Freeman also served on the Faculty at Bishop Shanahan High School, Downingtown, and as Newman Chaplain, Bryn Mawr, Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges. In 2004, Father Freeman was appointed Pastor, Saint John Fisher Parish, Boothwyn, where he served until retiring due to his health in September 2011.
The Reception of the Body will be held at Saint John Fisher Church, Boothwyn, on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at 4:00 PM, followed by visitation. A parish Mass will be held at 7:00 PM. Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father Freeman at Saint John Fisher Church, Boothwyn, on Friday, September 27, 2013, at 10:00 AM. Visitation will be held beginning at 8:30 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Edward P. Burke, Reverend Monsignor Edward M. Deliman, Reverend John J. Dinda, Reverend James E. McVeigh, and Reverend James C. Sherlock. Father Burke will be the homilist. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
