REVEREND FRANCIS H. GALLEN

1920 - 2014


Reverend Francis H. Gallen, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Augustine Parish, Bridgeport, died on Saturday May 17, 2014.

Father Gallen was born April 30, 1920, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late George F. Gallen and the late Mary C. Dalton. Father Gallen attended Saint Charles Parochial School, Oakview, and West Catholic High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Father Gallen was ordained on May 31, 1947, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, by Most Reverend Hugh L. Lamb. Father Gallen served as Parochial Vicar at All Saints Chapel, Philadelphia; Saint Clement Parish, Philadelphia; and Saint Patrick Parish, Kennett Square, Father Gallen also served as Chaplain in the United States Air Force from 1952 through 1980. In 1982, Father Gallen was appointed Pastor, Saint Augustine Parish, Bridgeport, and was appointed Pastor Emeritus in 1995.

The Reception of the Body will be held at Saints Peter and Paul Parish, West Chester, on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at 9:00 AM, followed by a viewing. Most Reverend Michael J. Fitzgerald will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father Gallen, at 11:00 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend Philip R. Barr, Reverend Monsignor John M. Galyo, Reverend Monsignor Wilfred J. Pashley, Reverend Jeffrey Rott, Reverend James C. Sherlock, and Reverend Monsignor Patrick E. Sweeney. Father Rott will be the Homilist.

Father Gallen is survived by his sisters, Rosemary Donaghue and Margaret H. F. Procko. Interment will be at Saint Augustine Cemetery, Bridgeport, Pennsylvania.
