Reverend John E. Fitzgerald, Retired, Resident, Saint Anselm Parish, Philadelphia, died at Villa Saint Joseph, Darby, on Monday, October 20, 2014.
Father Fitzgerald was born on June, 27, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the son of the late Albert Fitzgerald and the late Gertrude Clark. Father Fitzgerald attended Saint Francis Xavier Parochial School, Philadelphia, and LaSalle College High School, Philadelphia, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Father Fitzgerald was ordained on May 11, 1957, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Germantown, by Archbishop John F. O'Hara. C.S.C. Father Fitzgerald served as Parochial Vicar, Saint Joseph Parish, Ashland; Annunciation Parish, Shenandoah; Annunciation B.V.M, Parish, Havertown; Saint Helena Parish, Philadelphia; Nativity B.V.M. Parish, Philadelphia; Saint Margaret Parish, Narberth. Father Fitzgerald also served as Faculty, Bishop Kenrick High School, and as Principal, Bishop Shanahan High School, Downingtown. He served as Parochial Administrator Saint Albert The Great Parish, Huntingdon Valley. In 1984, he was named Pastor, Immaculate Conception Parish, Levittown. Father Fitzgerald was appointed to Senior Priest status, Resurrection of Our Lord Parish, Philadelphia, in 2000. He retired from active ministry in 2004.
The Reception of the Body will be held at Saint Anselm Church, Philadelphia, on Thursday, October 23, 2014, at 4:00 PM followed by a viewing. A vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM. Most Reverend Robert P. Maginnis will celebrate a Funeral Mass for Father Fitzgerald at Saint Anselm Church on Friday, October 24, 2014, at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held beginning at 9:00 AM. Concelebrating the Funeral Mass will be Reverend George J. Boyle, Reverend Monsignor Michael Carroll, Reverend Keith J. Chylinski, Reverend Thomas J. Dunleavy, Reverend Charles E. Gormley, Reverend Monsignor Ignatius L. Murray, Reverend Monsignor Joseph W. Murray, Reverend Richard E. Rudy. Father Dunleavy will be the Homilist.
Father Fitzgerald is survived by his sister, Mary Everett, and several nieces, nephews, and grand nieces, and grand nephews , Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon.
