Statement regarding the Draft Proposal presented at the USCCB
June 2002 MeetingThe bishops meeting in Dallas will serve as an important opportunity for the bishops to show in a united way that we are fully committed to the protection of children and youth. The draft charter is a strong starting point for our discussion. Certainly, the document is subject to modifications and I fully expect to see some changes made to it. I know that Archbishop Flynn and the ad hoc committee put a great deal of time and effort into this important work. I am reviewing the charter carefully and while this is a firm first step, I do have some thoughts that I will share next week at the meeting about how we bishops can shape this document to protect the most vulnerable among us --the children.
