Prison Ministry

“I was in prison and you visited me.” --Matthew 25: 36

Mission Statement of the Prison Ministry:

The Prison Ministry Program of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia seeks to carry out the Biblical work of mercy to “visit those in prison.” Through prison ministry, the Archdiocese seeks to maintain a relationship with its members who are incarcerated in prisons and jails. By a constant presence in the correctional facilities located within its boundaries, the Archdiocese responds to the pastoral and sacramental needs of prisoners, their families, and victims of crime. Through this presence the Church carries out Christ’s mission of evangelization, reconciliation, and redemption. The Prison Ministry Program also seeks to raise the voice of the Church in regard to the issues and debates within the American Criminal Justice System. Through presence and advocacy, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia strives to respond to the needs of “the least of our brothers and sisters.”
