"Nothing is equal to prayer; for what is impossible it makes possible, what is difficult, easy." (St. Alphonsus Liguori )
The Spiritual Adoption Program is an opportunity for participants to pray
especially for an unborn child who may be in danger of being aborted by “spiritually adopting” this baby for nine months. Participants pray for this baby daily that he or she will be carried to term and experience the fullness of life. They also pray for guidance for the baby’s parents and for the entire church community that we may continue to provide the care and services to assist children and their parents.
Although the identity of the unborn baby is not known to the “spiritual parents,” God knows who the child is. Participants name the baby in order to stay focused on the reality that their prayers are being heard by God and are helping to save a particular baby. Naming the baby helps participants develop a bond with their baby and to better understand the impact of abortion.
The Respect Life Office provides participants with prayer cards and materials to show how the baby is growing and developing throughout the nine months. These updates may be shared with the parish or school at large in order that the entire community may pray for the “adopted” baby.
At the end of nine months, participants conduct a “baby shower” to celebrate the birth of their new baby. A collection of donated baby items is taken up, and the items are given to a local pregnancy center, mothers’ home, or a needy family within the parish.
